A Dark Start

I got up really early this morning and was heading off at 5:30 to a meeting in the snow. It was really dark and not many people where on the road which was nice. This all changed rapidly. I was amazed at the lights that started to show on the horizon ahead. These lights turned out to be the spot lights at a gas station. I was not sure why a gas station needed so many lights that where actually pointed mostly into the sky. I was amazed at the harshness of this light and how it ripped through the dark morning sky.

I know that I was only able to experience this contrast because of the rural nature of where I live. I suspect that in the city the darkness is not like it is here. It is dark, yet the lights do not cut through it. It really got me to thinking about the light pollution that we have created. Don’t get me wrong I really enjoy the benefits of a street light on a dark night and I certainly enjoy having the lights on in my home. I guess I was just wondering what the plants and animals must think about all this light. It must really be strange.

I am home now and the beginning of my day is barely a memory, yet I wonder how it will be in ten or twenty years. How much light will turn the night to day?
