Big Box Store

I have recently discovered the psychology of shopping in the big club stores. I know that they have super sizes of a lot of items, yet more than that it is the scale of the building that prompts us to over buy. I have recently experienced how items in the warehouse seem to grow once they get home.  And this psychology applies to all super-sized stores not just the warehouse clubs. You can over purchase at Lowes and Home Depot just as easily. In those stores what you might end up with is a microwave or coffee maker that dwarfs the counter.

I am sure that some market analyst has figured all this out. They must have observed how people shop more in a larger space and stock up on items that appear to be a deal.  The average consumer does not sit and do a cost benefit analysis of the items they buy. It actually may not be worth it to blow the budget on 24 rolls of toilet paper this month just to save two cents a roll. And then there is the issue of storage. Does anyone really have storage space for 24 rolls of toilet paper?

None of what I am saying should be a surprise. The Christmas tree that is cut in the woods is always too big to fit in the house. This is just the same story twisted by marketing and used to get us to spend more. The oversized tree that I cut myself is easy for me to resolve. Being duped into over purchasing just bothers me as it is calculated manipulation. And that is just wrong on so many levels.
